Dissatisfaction with things as they are, the persistent struggle to reach expanding goals, not the triumphs, is what makes people great. This is the story of a man who never stopped trying even though his failures were many and his successes were few. He is today one of the most beloved Americans.
As a basketball teacher-coach who has spent a great amount of time on court these past few weeks training basketball players to prepare for their season, I’ve come to realize that I do have a few regrets from my years of training. I share them so you can re-consider what you’re doing these next few weeks as you prepare for try-outs and the first basketball games of the season.
Camaraderie is the spirit of good fellowship. It’s the mutual trust and friendship that emerges among people who spend a lot of time together. Championship teams have it. Winning coaches understand its importance.
With the season less than two months away, these next few weeks are critical to the success you’ll have as a basketball player this year. Here is your simple check list for this pre-season.

Having a strong core is essential to controlled movement, but many basketball players underestimate the importance of actually strengthening their hips and hip flexors. I can speak from personal experience that I worked the muscles around my hips (quads, glutes, and hamstrings) in isolation, and improved my “wheels” which isn’t wasted time, but I could have been more efficient by strengthening the engines and improving the wheels all in one.
Some ideas worth sharing are better off left to stand on their own. I hope that this poem provides you with the fuel to drive you toward your big dreams.
Each year, our directors spend a lot of time with the many special basketball players that our program attracts, along with great observing coaches. As shared in each of our first lectures, there are two types of players who attend any summer basketball camp or player development program: athletes and campers.
