How to perform a successful layup

There are two simple layups every young player should know – and they don’t include the commonly-taught layup off of one foot. They include:

  • JUMP STOP LAYUP: The most powerful layup a young player can learn is off of two feet. It allows the player to be both on balance and under control. Simply dribble in, sweep the ball into a jump stop, and then take off with both feet.
  • OUTSIDE/INSIDE POWER FINISH: This is another simple layup that young players should master. After driving in, plant the outside foot, then power up with a strong 1-2 finish.

On both layups the player can finish with a fake at the finish to allow the defender to fly by.
