Own Your Stuff

Today’s Monday Mindset: Own Your Stuff
I was recently coaching somebody up who made a mistake, and I felt like they got defensive and deflected.
Now, I’ve done that a million times over, so I know what that’s like.
I’m sure you have as well.
It’s hard to own the mistakes that we make, and it’s so much easier to blame or to make excuses, or to kind of deflect away. It wasn’t our fault. And in this instance, I coached this person up on how to actually own a mistake because it’s so easy to even just acknowledge it, but not make the other person feel like you owned it.
So what do you need to do? Do these two things.
The first is acknowledge it. Not just acknowledge it with your words, but actually feel it. Feel what they feel. Feel that disappointment or see if you can step. Put yourself in their shoes and feel what they feel.
And then secondly, take an action to make it right. Find a way to make it right. Any action that you can take, even if it’s just renewing your commitment to being different or doing different next time.
When you do those two things, you’ll help others feel like you are able to own your stuff.
You’re able to take responsibility for things.
And when you do that, that goes a long way to creating great relationships with anyone at any time when you can simply own your stuff.
So own it. That’s my challenge. That’s your Monday Mindset.
