Today’s Monday Mindset: Laugh With, Not At
Laugh with, not at.
This comes from my good friend Steve Sheba, who runs Game On Nation, and I heard him say, “We always need to laugh with others, not laugh at others.”
I was with a group of athletes and I heard one of them tell a joke and everybody laughed, but it was at one player’s expense and I could tell just by the facial expression of this player, he was embarrassed by the joke. Everyone else thought it was funny though, and everyone else was laughing.
Don’t do that.
Never tell a joke at somebody else’s expense unless you have so much relationship and rapport with them that you know they can handle it and you know that they will actually laugh along too.
So how do you know if you shouldn’t be laughing at somebody?
If they’re not laughing, you shouldn’t be laughing either.
If it’s about them, if they can laugh at themselves, then you probably have a good enough relationship that you can say something funny about them and they can receive it. But even then you should just check because a lot of us get self-conscious and we just put up a good front and laugh anyways.
Make it a habit of laughing with, never laughing at.
Put that into practice. You’ll be a better person for it.
Thanks to my man, Steve, for sharing that with me. I’ve tried to apply it ever since.
That’s my challenge. Laugh with, that’s your Monday Mindset.
