  • Today’s Monday Mindset: Maybe, Maybe Not

An ancient proverb for you today…

A Chinese farmer has his horse run away. That evening, all the neighbors come over and they say, that’s terrible.

And he simply says, maybe, maybe not. The next day, the horse returns and brings back seven other wild horses. And the neighbors come over and say, how lucky you are.

He says, maybe, maybe not. The next day, his son is trying to break in one of the horses and he falls off and breaks his leg. That evening, the neighbors come over and say, how unlucky, how terrible.

He says, maybe, maybe not. The next day, there’s a conscription for war. And they come to conscript people in the area, into the army to fight.

But his son has a broken leg and can’t go to war. His neighbors come over and say, you’re so fortunate.

    He says, maybe, maybe not.

The truth of the matter is, none of us can see the bigger picture with both the good events and what we judge as the bad events in our lives. I tore my Achilles tendon.

Is it bad? Maybe, maybe not. So no point in feeling sorry for myself when I don’t know what the bigger story is. And you don’t either with the events and circumstances in your life.

So why not take the maybe, maybe not approach? We’ll see. Time will play itself out. There is a bigger picture. There is a bigger story.

That’s my challenge. And that’s your Monday Mindset.
