The Lost Art of the Footwork
“Your feet are the foundation of every good basketball decision. When your feet are organized, your mind can stay calm.” — Inspired by Dick DeVenzio’s Stuff Good Players Should Know
Most turnovers under pressure do not happen because the defense is too good. They happen because the offensive player’s feet get stuck.
Footwork creates offensive freedom.
The pivot foot should not be viewed as a rule to avoid traveling. It should be viewed as a weapon. When players learn to pivot, step through pressure, and create new passing angles, they stop playing away from pressure and start solving it.
Footwork cannot be treated as an add-on to drills.
Every shooting, passing, and finishing drill should teach players how to arrive on balance, load properly, and transition into the next decision. When footwork is built into the rep, players do not just get shots up; they build habits that hold up when the game speeds up.
This lesson carries into the car ride home
Just like players must move their feet before pressure arrives, parents must choose their words before emotion takes over. The ride home can either create pressure or perspective. Use it to reinforce toughness, growth, leadership, and the value of learning through the game.
The lost art of footwork is really the lost art of preparation. Stuck feet lead to stuck decisions. Trained feet create balance, confidence, and freedom.
This week, challenge your players to think the game from the ground up.
