On first pass shots, writing the future, and living a life with deep meaning
September 5 | The 3-Point Play
BASKETBALL TIP
It should go without saying that dribbling downcourt and shooting anything but a layup—with no passes at all—should be avoided completely.
Most players, even lazy ones, give the impression they are ready to play good defense during the first five seconds of any defensive play. So as a result, any shot taken after only one pass is likely to be well defended, and followed by five players blocking out for the rebound, and prepared to fast break immediately.
The first pass shot should be refused—even if it’s a good shot, so that the same shot can be taken later when the defense is out of position.
LEADERSHIP LESSON
“Believe in your ability to create the future. That’s what leaders do—that is our job. Understand reality but never be imprisoned by it. Reality is a moment in time. The future has not yet been written—it is written by leaders.”
– Mark Miller
LIFE PRINCIPLE
“What we are looking for is not a life path that is easy, but one that is worthwhile. One that we are willing to hurt for, to reach for, to stretch for. One where the difficulty doesn’t become a deterrent, but a subtle motivator. One where we can go home at the end of the night and close our eyes and feel at ease with the fact that we tried our best toward something that really mattered in our lives or in someone else’s, and that, itself, is enough.”
– Brianna Wiest
