  • The “Right Time” Dilemma

“How young is too young?” “Is my 13-year-old ready for a college dorm?”

These are the questions that keep parents up at night during registration season. You don’t want to hold them back from a life-changing experience, but you also don’t want to throw them into the deep end before they can swim.

At PGC Basketball, we have sessions for various age groups (from rising 7th graders to college athletes). However, readiness is less about birth year and more about behavior.

We have seen mature 12-year-olds thrive, and we have seen immature 16-year-olds struggle. Here is a checklist of 7 signs that your child is ready to pack their bags for PGC.

    The Maturity Checklist

    1. They Can Wake themselves Up This sounds simple, but it is the first test of independence. At camp, mom and dad aren’t there to pull the covers off at 7:00 AM. If your child relies 100% on you to get out of bed for school, start training them now. Buy an alarm clock. If they can manage their own morning routine, they are ready.

    2. They Can Keep Track of Their Gear Shoes, water bottle, room key, notebook, backpack. That is a lot to manage. If your child constantly loses their phone or leaves their jersey at home, an overnight camp might be a struggle.

    • The PGC Test: Can they pack their own bag for a weekend tournament without you checking it?

    3. They Can Sleep Away from Home Have they done sleepovers? Have they stayed with grandparents for a few days? If they get severe homesickness after one night away, a 5-day intense camp might be overwhelming. A little homesickness is normal; crippling anxiety is a sign to wait a year.

    4. They Love the Game (Not Just the Socializing) PGC is long. It is basketball from morning to night. If your child complains after a 90-minute practice, they aren’t ready for a 10-hour day. They need to have a genuine “hunger” for the sport.

    5. They Can Advocate for Themselves If they have a headache, will they tell a coach? If they are hungry, will they get more food? We have staff everywhere, but we aren’t mind readers. Your child needs the confidence to speak up when they need help.

    6. They Can Handle Correction This is the big one. Are they ready to be critiqued by a stranger? If they shut down or cry every time a coach corrects them, PGC will be a rough week. We are positive, but we are demanding. They need the emotional maturity to separate “feedback” from “failure.”

    7. They WANT to Go This is the most important sign. Are you pushing them, or are they pulling you? If you have to bribe them to go, don’t send them. The athletes who get the most out of PGC are the ones who watched the videos, read the website, and begged their parents to sign up.

    It’s a Growth Spurt

If your child hits 5 or 6 of these points, they are ready. And remember, camp itself is a teacher. They might arrive struggling with #2 (losing gear), but after losing a sock and having to wash one in the sink, they will leave as a master of their inventory.

    Let them grow.
