The 8 Laws of Learning
In the acquisition of skills in the game of basketball empirical evidence shows decision making and problem solving are a huge component that has been underutilized. The use of IP or “information processing” is a theory that explores how humans ‘acquire’ the movement skills required to be successful in basketball. IP theory suggests that humans respond to stimuli (defenders, location of teammates, location of ball) from the environment, before processing this information by selecting and action response from a choice of available actions.
Information Processing theory has three stages:
The cognitive stage: This stage has a high cognitive load where lots of errors are visible within movement executions.
The associative stage: A player may grasp the basics and reduce variability in movements through repetition, reducing cognitive load so the player has the ability to process information.
The autonomous stage: Executing skill involves little conscious thought as players perform skills without thinking, freeing up a greater amount of cognitive capacity.
As John Wooden, UCLA Coach famously said “The eight laws of learning are explanation, demonstration, imitation, repetition, repetition, repetition, repetition, repetition.
