Is Giving 87% the Key to Unlocking Your Basketball Potential?
Back in the day, Dick DeVenzio (founder of PGC) ran a camp called the 87% Basketball Camp…
From what I’ve been told, coaches would see players walking around in t-shirts with this name on them and invariably say something to the effect of…
“Hey, what’s with this 87 percent stuff? You gotta give 100 percent!”
Often they took it one step further.
“You gotta give 110 percent!”
You probably hear something similar from time to time. But this advice is just dead wrong.
It’s all hype. Garbage. Why?
Because no one gives everything. Those who believe they do, typically fall short of achieving their dreams.
Most coaches I know much prefer the player who gives an honest 87 percent, who knows it, and who’s constantly trying to add 2 percent here and 2 percent there. You see, there’s a certain complacency in the player who calls themself a 100 percenter.
It’s easy to imagine that kind of player has quit thinking and quit actively searching for ways to do more. Apparently, they think they already do everything. But what they should be doing is spending their time thinking up ways to do more.
“What could I add here?”
“What could I add there?”
“Is there some way to do this just a little bit better?”
This is the mindset of a player in pursuit of excellence and it’s exactly the kind of mindset coaches at the next level look for when deciding who to play on their team. It’s also the kind of growth mindset I encourage you to help your child develop if you want them to reach their full potential.
Anyway, maybe this helps, maybe not…
But something I know helps for sure is our PGC Overnight Basketball Camps.
Once at camp, your child will be surrounded by many ‘87 percenters’ in search of gaining that 1% edge that might make all the difference later in life!
