Playmaker vs. Scoring College: Which PGC Session is Right for Your Athlete?
The Decision Dilemma
You’ve decided that PGC Basketball is the right place for your athlete this summer. You know they need the intensity, the classroom sessions, and the mental training. You’re ready to register.
But then you see the options: Playmaker College and Scoring College.
And you pause. “My son is a point guard, but he needs to score more. Which one does he need?” or “My daughter is a Center… is Playmaker College only for guards?”
Choosing the right session is critical to maximizing your investment. While both courses share the core PGC DNA (SCHAPE, leadership, intensity), they focus on very different aspects of the game.
This guide will break down the differences, debunk the myths, and help you make the right choice for your athlete’s development.

Option 1: Playmaker College (The Flagship)
This is the curriculum that put PGC on the map.
The Focus: Leadership, Decision Making, and Running the Team. Playmaker College is about being the “General” on the floor. It focuses heavily on:
- Protecting the Ball: eliminating turnovers against pressure.
- Passing: precision, timing, and angles.
- Defense: how to dictate the offense and communicate help.
- Leadership: how to run a huddle and manage teammates’ emotions.
Who is it for?
- Point Guards: Obviously. If you have the ball in your hands, you need this.
- The “Glue Guy/Girl”: Players who want to be the smartest player on the floor.
- Centers and Forwards: Wait, really? Yes. Post players need to know how to pass out of double teams, how to communicate on defense, and how to be leaders. Don’t let the name “Playmaker” fool you—it applies to all 5 positions.
The “If… Then” Test:
- If your child struggles with turnovers… Choose Playmaker.
- If your child is quiet on the court… Choose Playmaker.
- If your child wants to be a team captain… Choose Playmaker.
Option 2: Scoring College (The Specialist)
While Playmaker teaches you how to run the team, Scoring College teaches you how to put the ball in the basket.
The Focus: Creating Separation, Finishing, and Movement. This course dives deep into the physics of scoring. It covers:
- Off-Ball Movement: How to get open without the ball (cutting, screening).
- The First Step: How to beat your defender off the dribble.
- Finishing: How to score over taller defenders in the paint.
- Shot Selection: Understanding “good” vs. “great” shots.
Who is it for?
- Shooting Guards/Wings: Players whose primary job is to get buckets.
- Struggling Scorers: Players who have good skills but struggle to get their shot off in games.
- Advanced Players: Those who have already mastered the leadership basics and want to refine their 1-on-1 game.
The “If… Then” Test:
- If your child struggles to create their own shot… Choose Scoring.
- If your child stands around when they don’t have the ball… Choose Scoring.
- If your child needs to average 15+ PPG next season… Choose Scoring.

Common Myths & FAQ
Myth: “I have to do Playmaker before Scoring.” Reality: Not necessarily, but it is often recommended. Playmaker lays the foundation of IQ and habits. Scoring builds on that. However, if your child is already a vocal leader but can’t score, go straight to Scoring College.
Myth: “Scoring College is just shooting drills.” Reality: Far from it. We don’t just stand there and shoot 500 reps. We teach the how and why of getting open. It is about “intelligent scoring,” not just volume shooting.
Myth: “My child is a beginner, they should do Playmaker.” Reality: Both courses are intense. If your child is truly a beginner (new to basketball), look at our “Skills Academy” day camps first. Playmaker and Scoring Colleges are for players with a baseline of experience who are ready to work.
The Verdict: You Can’t Go Wrong
Here is the good news: There is significant overlap.
- In Scoring College, we still demand leadership and communication.
- In Playmaker College, we still play competitive games where scoring is required.
Both courses will make your child a smarter, tougher, more resilient player.
Our Recommendation: If you are completely torn, start with Playmaker College. It is the heart and soul of the PGC methodology. It teaches the “intangibles” that will keep a player on the floor regardless of their shooting percentage. Once they have mastered the ability to lead and protect the ball, send them to Scoring College the following summer to sharpen their offensive weapons.
