Why Your “Top Speed” is Actually Slowing You Down

“The player who can control their own speed controls the defender; the player who only knows how to run fast is completely at the mercy of the defense.” — Dick DeVenzio

We’ve all seen the player who looks like they are shot out of a cannon. They sprint baseline to baseline, sweat dripping, legs churning at maximum velocity. They look incredibly dynamic.

They are also incredibly easy to guard.

When you play at only one speed—100%—you hand the defense a gift: predictability. True athletic dominance on the basketball court isn’t about raw, linear velocity; it’s about the deliberate manipulation of momentum, body language, and space. To truly unlock your scoring and playmaking potential, you must master the art of the “Freeze” and the power of deceleration.

    The Trap of Constant Velocity

When you attack a defender at maximum speed, you give up your ability to react. If a help-side defender steps into the lane, your momentum carries you right into a charge or a contested, off-balance floater.

By shifting your mindset from velocity to pace, you become an offensive illusionist.

    • The Power of the 50% Shift: The most unguardable players aren’t those who run the fastest, but those who can seamlessly drop from 100% speed down to 50%, and then explode back to 100% in a split second. This sudden change of pace disrupts a defender’s timing and forces them to guess.

    • The “Freeze” Technique: By utilizing a sudden hesitation, an upright shift in posture, or an intentional eye manipulation, you can momentarily immobilize both your on-ball defender and help-side helpers. When they freeze to adjust to your sudden pause, you dictate the next move.

    • Deceptive Geometry: Your eyes are a weapon. Elite players look off help-side defenders, using their vision to shape the defense and open up passing windows without changing their physical location on the floor.

    Your Actionable Training Blueprint

Next time you step onto the court for a workout, stop timing how fast you can complete a drill. Instead, focus on rhythm. Practice attacking a cone at full speed, coming to a sudden, balanced stop (the freeze), manipulating an imaginary defender with your eyes, and explosively changing direction using precise inside and reverse pivots.

Control the tempo, and you control the game.
