#1 Thing College Basketball Coaches Hate in a Recruit
The other day I heard a story from one of the Yale Women’s Basketball coaches, Amber, who used to work as a PGC staff member…
It was during one of the bi-weekly mentorship calls, which has about 20 student athletes in it (Amber joined as a special guest), and one of the players asked Amber…
“What’s the #1 thing you look for when deciding who NOT to recruit for your team?”
Here’s Amber’s response…
“Bad body language! If you’re getting subbed out of the game and not high-fiving your teammates, or your coach is trying to give you feedback and you’re not locked into them… anything like that, we’re like, oh man, they either think they’re better than. It’s very obvious that kind of player’s intentions aren’t about the team.”
Aka…
College coaches are watching EVERYTHING.
- Your body language…
- How you high-five your teammates…
- Your energy on the bench…
- Your eye contact with your coach…
- And so much more.
It kinda reminded me of when former Michigan State Women’s Basketball Head Coach, Suzy Merchant, shared how she approached recruiting.
She’d go to a game she knew would be a blowout just to watch how the player treated their teammates and even how they treated their parents before and after the game.
She placed HUGE value on the intangibles.
So take note…
The “little things” can and absolutely will make or break a player’s chances of playing in college.
Especially nowadays because coaches can’t take “a chance” on a player.
There’s too much at stake in the college basketball world.
On that note, there’s only one camp on the planet that combines learning the “little things” with high-level basketball IQ playmaking development.
And that camp is PGC Basketball.
It’s definitely not for every basketball player (in fact it’s probably realistically only for about 5–10% of players)…
But it was a great fit for Idaho/Gatorade Player of the Year and 2025 Columbia WBB Commit, Shay Shippen who recently said that she would not be playing in college had it not been for attending a PGC Camp.
Anyway, spots in camp are disappearing faster than Luka Doncic jerseys at the NBA store.
