On shortening a pass, being a leader who cares, and embracing what makes you different
December 26 | The 3-Point Play
BASKETBALL TIP
It should be pretty clear that a six-foot pass is easier to complete than a 15-foot pass.
But yet, players still throw difficult, long passes that barely get there or get stolen because they don’t think to dribble a bit closer before they throw it.
Shortening a pass is not necessary, of course, if the defense is allowing you the pass you want to throw. But if the defense is overplaying your passes, it is foolish to pass from far away.
Use a dribble to get close so you can force the defenders to guard against both the straight pass and the backdoor.
LEADERSHIP LESSON
“Make sure that you are seeing each person on your team with fresh eyes every day. People evolve, and so your relationships must evolve with them. Care personally; don’t put people in boxes and leave them there.”
– Kim Malone Scott
LIFE PRINCIPLE
“Embrace your strangeness. Identify what makes you different. Fuse those things together and become an anomaly.”
– Robert Greene

Players often fail to realize that fouls are errors. Not just because five of them will put you on the bench, but because they allow mediocre players to score points on uncontested 15-foot shots.
