Am I Good Enough? Understanding the Skill Level Required for PGC
The Imposter Syndrome
Scanning through the PGC website, you see photos of intense athletes, sweaty faces, and serious film sessions. You read testimonials from D1 college players.
A doubt creeps in: “Is my kid good enough for this?”
It is a valid fear. No parent wants to set their child up for failure. You don’t want to drop them off at a camp where they are getting dunked on every play or feel completely out of place.
But here is the misconception: People confuse “Elite Skill” with “Elite Attitude.”
PGC is an elite camp, yes. But the barrier to entry isn’t a 30-inch vertical leap or a 40% three-point percentage. The barrier to entry is a willingness to learn.

Who PGC is NOT For
Let’s start with who should not attend.
- The “Casual” Hooper: If your child only plays basketball because you force them to, they will hate PGC.
- The “Recess” Player: If they just want to jack up half-court shots and don’t care about footwork or defense, they will struggle.
- The “Daycare” Seeker: If you are just looking for a place to drop them off for 8 hours so they aren’t playing video games, this is the wrong fit.
Who PGC IS For
PGC is for the “Dedicated” Player. This is the kid who:
- May not be the best on the team, but wants to be.
- Is frustrated by their own mistakes and wants to fix them.
- Is willing to carry a notebook and a pen.
- Loves the game enough to handle 10-12 hours of it a day.
We have had starters on state championship teams, and we have had kids who come off the bench for their JV team. They can both thrive at PGC. Why? Because Basketball IQ is the great equalizer.
The bench player can learn to be smarter than the starter. The starter can learn to be a better leader. The curriculum scales to the player’s ambition, not just their current talent level.
The “Grouping” System
You might worry: “My 14-year-old JV player is going to get crushed by a 17-year-old varsity senior.”
We handle this carefully. While PGC is a collective learning environment, we typically group athletes by age and ability for the competitive portions.
- College/Pro Division: For older, advanced players.
- High School Division: For standard varsity/JV level players.
- Middle School/Junior: For the younger, up-and-coming athletes.
Your child will be challenged, but they won’t be physically endangered. We want them to stretch, not snap.

The “Brain” Doesn’t Care How High You Jump
Remember, a huge portion of PGC is classroom-based.
- Can your child listen?
- Can they write notes?
- Can they watch a video clip and identify what went wrong?
These skills do not require athleticism. We have seen “average” athletes become the stars of the classroom sessions because they are locked in. These players often gain the most confidence because they realize, “Hey, I understand the game better than the guy who can dunk.”
That confidence transforms their on-court performance. They stop playing scared. They start playing smart.
Come as You Are, Leave Better
Don’t wait until your child is “perfect” to send them to PGC. You send them to PGC to get them closer to that potential.
If they love the game, and if they are willing to work hard, they are “good enough.” The only requirement is a heartbeat for hoops and a mind open to coaching.
