Why Your Kid Needs a Notebook Not Just Sneakers to Improve IQ
The “School” in Basketball School
Imagine a medical student who spends all day in the hospital but never opens a textbook. They might learn some things by trial and error, but they will never master their craft.
Basketball is no different. Yet, 99% of basketball camps operate on the “gym only” model. They run drills, they play games, and they go home.
At PGC, we break the mold. We require every athlete to bring a notebook, a pen, and their full attention to a classroom setting.
For a teenager, the idea of “school during summer” might sound unappealing. But ask any PGC grad, and they will tell you: The classroom is where the lightbulbs turn on.

What Happens in a PGC Classroom?
This isn’t boring math class. This is “Hoops 101.”
- Film Breakdown: We watch clips of college and pro games. We pause, rewind, and analyze. We show why a play worked or failed.
- Chalk Talk: Instructors draw up scenarios. “You are trapped in the corner with 3 seconds left. What do you do?”
- Vocabulary: We give players a shared language. Terms like “hunt the paint,” “check 6,” and “gap awareness” become second nature.
Why the Notebook Matters
- Retention: Science proves that the act of writing things down increases memory retention. When a player writes, “Always jump stop in the paint,” they are more likely to actually do it in a game than if they just heard a coach scream it once.
- The “Bible”: The notebook becomes a resource for life. We have alumni in their 30s who tell us they still have their PGC notebook. They use it to coach their own kids. It is a tangible takeaway of their investment.
- Focus: In a gym, it’s easy to zone out. In a classroom, with a pen in hand, you have to be engaged. It teaches the discipline of study.
Translating “Desk Work” to “Court Work”
The magic of PGC is the immediate application.
- 9:00 AM: Sit in the classroom. Watch a clip on “Defensive Angles.” Write down the 3 keys to a good closeout.
- 10:00 AM: Walk onto the court. The whistle blows. We run a drill specifically designed to practice those angles.
This “Learn-Do” loop is the fastest way to acquire a skill. Most camps skip the “Learn” part and just hope the kids figure it out while doing. We provide the blueprint before we ask them to build the house.

For the Parents: The Academic Bonus
Here is a side benefit parents love: PGC helps kids become better students in school.
- They learn to take organized notes.
- They learn to sit still and focus for extended periods.
- They learn that “studying” leads to “winning.”
When a child sees that studying film helps them score more points, they start to understand the value of preparation. That mindset shift often follows them back to their high school history class in the fall.
The Smartest Player Wins
In the NBA, everyone is athletic. LeBron James isn’t just great because he is strong; he is great because he has a photographic memory of opposing plays. He is a student of the game.
If you want your child to have an advantage over the competition, don’t just train their legs. Train their brain.
Buy them the sneakers. But make sure they pack the notebook.
