  • The “Mean” Coach

“My coach hates me.” “He keeps yelling at me.” “I can’t do anything right.”

As a parent, hearing these words from your child is heartbreaking. Your instinct is to protect them. You want to call the coach. You want to fix it.

But in the world of competitive athletics, this is a dangerous trap. There is a massive difference between abuse (which is never okay) and demanding coaching (which is necessary for growth).

Many young athletes today struggle to differentiate the two. They view correction as a personal attack. They shut down when voices get raised.

At PGC, we view “Coachability” as a skill—perhaps the most important skill. We actively teach athletes how to handle criticism, how to process “tough love,” and how to use it as fuel.

    The Concept of “Deliberate Practice”

We teach athletes that comfort is the enemy of growth. If you are at practice and no one is correcting you, you aren’t getting better. You are just exercising.

    The PGC Reframing:

    • Bad Perspective: “The coach is yelling at me because he thinks I’m bad.”
    • PGC Perspective: “The coach is yelling at me because he sees potential in me and refuses to let me be average.”

We teach athletes to crave feedback. We teach them that silence from a coach is actually the scariest thing—because it means the coach has given up on you.

    How We Deliver Feedback

At PGC, our Directors are trained to be demanding but affirming. We don’t do “sandwich” feedback (compliment-criticism-compliment). We give direct, honest feedback.

    • “That pass was lazy. You are better than that. Do it again.”
    • “You aren’t communicating. If you want to lead this team, you need to speak up.”

It can be jarring for a kid who is used to being the star of their local team. But it is necessary. It thickens their skin.

    The Classroom Essentials

If your child wants to play in college, they need a reality check. College coaches are under immense pressure to win. Their jobs are on the line. They do not have time to coddle feelings. They scream. They bench players. They demand perfection.

If a player hasn’t learned to handle that pressure before they get to campus, they will transfer or quit within a year.

We act as a “simulator” for that environment. We provide a safe space to experience high-pressure coaching.

    • We induce stress.
    • We demand precision.
    • But then… we debrief.

The “Debrief” is Key Unlike a chaotic game, at PGC, we pause and explain why we are being tough. “I am pushing you right now because I know you have another gear. Do you feel that? That is what excellence feels like.”

For the Parents: What You Might Hear

Your child might call you mid-week and say, “The Director is really strict.” Don’t panic. Celebrate it. Say: “That’s great. What is he trying to teach you? Are you listening to the tone or the message?”

Help them separate the delivery from the data. The delivery might be loud; the data is how they get better.

    The Gift of Truth

The world will not always be nice to your child. Their future boss won’t always be nice. Learning to look a superior in the eye, accept a hard truth, and say “I’ll fix it” is a superpower.

We don’t just build basketball players. We build resilient young adults who don’t crumble when life gets hard.
