  • You are not a threat on the court
if you’re not a threat to score

Great shooters like JJ Reddick and Klay Thompson are always ready to shoot. Shot preparation is the number one way to increase your shot attempts. Join PGC Director Jayson Wells as he shares how to improve your shot attempts through preparation.

The number one difference between high school players and higher level athletes is that often high school players are not ready to shoot.

What does good shot preparation look like?

It is simply being prepared to shoot the basketball, before you have the ball in your hands. If you are prepared, you will increase your shots without having to shoot faster.

There are a two ways to be ready to receive the ball:

    1. Airborne Receiver

When the ball is in the air off a pass, your feet are in the air. On the catch, you can simply raise up into your shot.

    2. One Foot Step

When the ball is in the air off a pass, you step into your shot.

What does good shot preparation feel like?

It feels like you’re at your most comfortable position to catch and shoot the ball. You’re not rushed but you’re also not taking your time. You are able to comfortably catch the ball and rise up into your shot.

What does good shot preparation do?

You are not a threat on the court unless you’re really a threat to score.

You don’t have to shoot faster as long as you’re prepared to shoot the ball once the ball hits your hands. Work on your shot prep and you’ll get more field goal attempts.

Become a dangerous shooter at a PGC camp near you where you will discover how to master the shots all great scorers need in their toolbox and increase your shooting accuracy off the catch, dribble, and off ball screens.
