On your approach, getting buy-in, and the need for uninterrupted rest
January 11 | The 3-Point Play
BASKETBALL TIP
There’s no under-confidence. There’s no overconfidence. There is just focus and effort to get the job done.
The typical definition of taking an opponent lightly entails not coming ready to play, not trying as hard as you can, not giving your very best effort. A champion simply cannot identify with that kind of approach to sport.
A game is a game. A practice is a practice. At both, you come ready, you try hard, and you do the very best that you can. There really isn’t any other way to become a true champion.
LEADERSHIP LESSON
“Great teams make clear and timely decisions and move forward with complete buy-in from every member of the team, even those who voted against the decision.
They leave meetings confident that no one on the team is quietly harboring doubts about whether to support the actions agreed on.”
– Patrick Lencioni
LIFE PRINCIPLE
“If you keep interrupting your evening to check and respond to email, or put aside a few hours after dinner to catch up on an approaching deadline, you’re robbing your directed attention centers of the uninterrupted rest they need for restoration.
Even if these work dashes consume only a small amount of time, they prevent you from reaching the levels of deeper relaxation in which attention restoration can occur. Only the confidence that you’re done with work until the next day can convince your brain to downshift to the level where it can begin to recharge for the next day to follow.”
– Cal Newport
