  • There is no question that head coach Jill Dunn will count on senior guard Gigi Thomas as a leader this season following her completion at the Point Guard College in Carrollton, Ga.

Thomas was one of 65 athletes invited to the camp which was specially designed to teach basketball players to play the game intelligently, to train purposefully, to be “coaches on the court,” and to be true leaders during games, in practice, during the off-season, and in everyday life.

“We are extremely proud of Gigi and the way she represented our program and Jacksonville University,” said Dunn. “We want our players to be great examples in everything they do.”

Despite not being able to play due to injury, Thomas constantly encouraged the rest of the other players at the camp which allowed her to be chosen as one of the 12 captains.

“We were fortunate enough to have her with us last week at Point Guard College,” said Mara Schanfield, a counselor at Point Guard College. “Although she was unable to play, she brought an admirable amount of energy and enthusiasm each and every day. Not only did she set an example for the other injured players, she provided valuable feedback and pointers to all of the other athletes. By the week’s end, everyone knew her and her contagious excellence became the standard.”

As a junior last season, Thomas finished third on the team in steals (30) and fourth in scoring (7.4). She scored in double-digits in the final four games, including a season-best 23 points and two blocks in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament win over Campbell. Thomas also had 14 points and a season-high five steals against the Camels (2/25).
