Today’s Monday Mindset: Take the High Road
by PGC Basketball Camp President Mano Wasta
Welcome to your Monday Mindset, where you discover how to be your best so you can give your best.
Quick story here.
Many years ago, we had run a session at one of our college campuses and it was the end of the year, and we realized the college campus had not invoiced us for the total cost of all the meals and accommodations for the players and staff who had stayed on campus that week.
Now typically, we’d never object to a campus delaying in invoicing us. But in this case, it was now the end of the year and we still hadn’t received anything. One of our staff members said to me, “Mano, maybe we won’t have to pay the bill at all.” It was going to be $20,000 or $30,000. But I said, “Let’s get in touch with this college campus and let them know we have yet to receive an invoice, and we wanted to make good on it and pay it.”
Why did I do that? The really simple principle of always taking the high road.
It’s so easy at times to the low road and even tempting. Sure, it was tempting to not to have to pay a $20,000 or $30,000 invoice. But I thought to myself, “How would I feel if I was in their situation?”
Now sure, it was their responsibility to invoice us. But what if we had mistakenly forgotten or thought we had invoiced someone and we hadn’t? I would want another company got in touch with me and said, “Mano. Hey, we owe you money and you haven’t invoiced us yet.” I would want someone to do that for me. So in turn, I wanted us to do it for this college campus.
Just a small example of the pre-decision to always take the high road. You’re going to have countless opportunities. Each one of us do, every single year, to choose the low road or the high road.
Make the decision today, that no matter what comes your way, whether it’s relationally or whether it’s a business decision or whatever it may be, choose to take the high road. You never lose in the end when you make that choice.
And that’s today’s Monday Mindset.
