On taking ownership, successful failure, and the power of the imagination
BASKETBALL TIP
Stop blaming others when things don’t go your way.
Teammates—whether reserves, starters, or stars—will make mistakes. Coaches will, too. Referees, the playing conditions, the equipment—all of it can go wrong. That’s part of the game. It’s not a surprise. It’s a given in the athletic equation.
The only unknown is you.
What are you going to do about it? What could you have done differently? How can you maximize your impact in the face of adversity?
Take ownership of the situation. Stop pointing fingers and start taking responsibility for what you can control.
LEADERSHIP LESSON
“Nothing fails like success. In other words, when a challenge in life is met by a response that is equal to it, you have success. But when the challenge moves to a higher level, the old, once successful response no longer works—it fails; thus, nothing fails like success.”
– Kerry Patterson
LIFE PRINCIPLE
“To see is to experience the world as it is, to remember is to experience the world as it was, but to imagine-ah, to imagine is to experience the world as it isn’t and has never been, but as it might be. The greatest achievement of the human brain is its ability to imagine objects and episodes that do not exist in the realm of the real, and it is this ability that allows us to think about the future.”
– Daniel M. Gilbert
