  • Here’s the third installment of my series of random coaching nuggets that contain some more notes that I’ve collected from great basketball coaches and speakers over the last few years:

    PART 1PART 2 ]
    h5>>Coach Don Meyer’s Rules

    • Plan the week on Sunday.
    • Plan the next day the night before.
    • Exercise.
    • Say no.
    • Take mini-vacations.
    • Keep a journal (not what you did but what you learned).
    Fran Fraschilla on Practice Organization
    • Practice is sacred.
    • Fight for your culture in practice.
    • What do you stand for?
    • Do your players know what you stand for?
    • Prepare practice as if (name a famous coach) were coming to watch you.
    • Most important thing you can do to earn respect from your players is know your stuff and be prepared. Show your players that you are organized 100% of the time.
    Hubie Brown on Game Thoughts
    • A coach must pay extreme attention to the last six (6) minutes of a game. Ask yourself, and then break them down the day after a game:
      • Did we get high percentage shots for our shooters?
      • Did we get to the free throw line?
      • Turnovers.
    • 3 toughest offensive actions to guard:
      • 1- Staggered screen for a shooter.
      • 2- Dribble handoff.
      • 3- Backscreen.
    • Key Half-Time Basketball Statistics:
      • Offensive rebounds (and points off those rebounds)
      • Fastbreak Percentage (and point off the fastbreak)
      • Deflections (This statistic shows that the basketball team is working and it tells the coach that the team is bothering the opposition and keeping them from making the pass to the spot they want).
Juan Pablo Favero on Mental Toughness for Coaches
    • When you look at the qualities that successful teams and mentally tough athletes possess, it is clear to see that these same qualities are just as important for a coach, including:
      • A strong desire to succeed.
      • Positivity in the face of challenges and pressure.
      • Controlling the ‘controllable’ mentally.
      • A high commitment / balanced attitude approach.
      • A high level of belief in self and team.
      • A process-orientation.
      • Positive communication and body language.
